He attended Stockport Grammar School, where he began his athletic career as an aspiring rugby player and it was only a chance outing at the local basketball court that enticed Amaechi to give basketball a try.Soon basketball became his passion and by the age of 16, his dream was to play basketball professionally in the NBA.He and his mother formulated a plan for launching his career.Realizing that the best chance for stardom would be in the United States, Amaechi moved to Toledo, Ohio.He was born in Boston in the USA and was raised in England.Amaechi started his basketball career at the age of 17 and was enrolled in the St.MANCHESTER-BASED former NBA (National Basketball Association) star John Amaechi has launched a nationwide competition that offers 10 days of free coaching to young aspiring players. He received special recognition in the NBA's Hall of Fame for scoring first points in the new millennium. He said: “I see the frustrated talent around the UK. Amaechi, the first British player to start a game in the NBA, said the competition was his personal response to the withdrawal of all elite level funding for basketball earlier this year by UK Sport.As a high school basketball star, he was targeted by the country's top universities, and he ultimately signed to play for Vanderbilt University, though transferred to Penn State University a year later.In his three seasons at Penn State he was twice named First Team Academic All-American.
